A cyst is a pathological cavity containing fluid or semi-fluid material not formed due to the accumulation of pus rather due to hydrostatic pressure. Odontogenic cysts are benign in nature and most frequently develop in the mandible or maxilla. The cysts are usually defined by their histologic characteristics and their location.
Types of cysts
Periapical cyst: A periapical cyst is a radicular cyst that develops around the roots of teeth as a result of a pulpal infection. When the tooth is infected it leads to pulpal necrosis. Periapical inflammation occurs when the toxins of the tooth exit from the apex of the tooth stimulating Malassez epithelial rests. An infected periapical granuloma develops when these epithelial rests find their way to the periodontal ligament.
Dentigerous cysts: Dentigerous cysts develop around an uninterrupted tooth such as a wisdom tooth. They develop in the normal dental follicle and are not neoplastic. They tend to be very large and have the capacity to move the teeth.
Primordial cysts: The primordial cyst grows in place of a tooth and is normally a cystic degeneration of a dental follicle.
Residual cysts: Residual cysts are remnants of periapical cysts that have formed after teeth have been removed.
Cyst enucleation - Treatment at Dental Solutions
The process of enucleation would mean to remove the entire lesion with causing any ruptures. Very small cysts are addressed effectively with the procedure especially when vital structures are not involved. Under general anaesthesia the gum flap in the area is lifted up and the tooth is extracted. A window in the jaw bone is created to access the cyst with the help of a thin curette blade. The cystic lining is then cleaved from the cavity and a water tight closure is achieved. For larger cysts, external pressure dressing may be applied which is removed after 24 hours.
